Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez Talks About How Football Saved Him From a Life in Poverty

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez has talked about the squalid surroundings he grew up around and insists that football saved him from a life in poverty.

The Chilean international has got off to a brilliant start in the Premier League this season, thriving in the new striking position that Arsene Wenger has deployed him in so far.

The former Barcelona player is now one of the most recognisable players in world football but the 27-year-old has come a long way from his humble beginnings in Tocopilla.

Sanchez reveals via the afcstuff Twitter account that he used to wash cars as a boy so that he could afford to buy himself football boots, and used to reassure his mother that he would one day be the star he is now:

For a man who is said to be currently negotiating a new contract reportedly worth around £200,000 per week, that’s pretty humble beginnings, eh?

Sanchez already has five goals to his name in this campaign, and following the late win over Burnley at the weekend, there is a real feeling that he could be spearheading a Gunners title challenge – and nobody would deserve a Premier League winner’s medal more than Sanchez.
