Gerard Pique Recalls Man Utd’s Squad Setting Patrice Evra’s Trainers Alight

Gerard Pique has revealed that the Manchester United squad once taught Patrice Evra a lesson he wouldn’t forget – by setting his trainers on fire.

The Barcelona superstar was at United as a youngster between 2004 and 2008, and has been taking a stroll down memory lane by recalling one his favourite training ground pranks.

Pique says Evra had been waiting several months for a new pair of Nike shoes to arrive which featured the embroidered name of his children on either heel.

Finally, when they arrived, Evra was delighted, but when he went for a shower after training one day, his new trainers strangely went missing – and he was eventually sent a video of them on fire.

Speaking to Spanish TV programme TV3, via the Mirror, Pique explained: “Evra one day came into the changing rooms wearing some Nike trainers that he’d ordered four months before, with the name of his kids embroidered on them. Very shiny.

“When he went for a shower, they took them and burnt them.

“What’s more, they recorded it and they sent him the video. This was the level [of practical jokes] at United.

“I recognise that they were pretty strong but in an English changing room it was something normal.”

Whilst Evra went on to recover from the ordeal and make almost 400 appearances for United, winning the Champions League and Premier League in the process, Pique – and his shoes – made it out in one piece and headed for sunnier climes in Catalonia.

What do you think of the prank? Too far?
