Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka Says Arsene Wenger Has Given Him a ‘Free Role’ in Midfield

He was billed as Arsenal‘s new holding midfield player, but Granit Xhaka has revealed that Arsene Wenger has given him carte blanche to run riot in the middle of the park.

The tough-tackling Swiss international moved to the Emirates from Borussia Mönchengladbach last summer for a fee in the region of £30 million, and has been in and out of the Gunners’ starting XI so far this season.

But when asked for his thoughts on where he fit in the Arsenal midfield, Xhaka’s response was intriguing, as he insisted his manager is OK with him having a ‘free role’:

It’s been a curious start to his Arsenal career, that’s for sure, and it’s difficult to explain why Xhaka can’t quite nail down a starting berth.

But should he really be playing in a free role? Is he the right kind of creative player for that?
