The Egyptian international has managed to cement his place in the Gunners’ first-team since arriving from Swiss side Basel in January this year despite fierce competition from the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere.
The 24-year-old played in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford, and there’s absolutely no doubt that Elneny has settled in well to life in the Premier League.
However, the man himself admits he owes a lot of his success Switzerland international Fabian Schar.
Speaking in an interview with DMC Sports, via the Mirror, Elneny said: “I was very happy when I joined Arsenal but I asked one of my friends how the negotiations started and if they had scouted me before.
“He told me that Arsenal officials were scouting Fabian Schär in the first place, and that’s when they noticed me.
“All of us at Basel knew that Schär was linked with Arsenal and at every season’s end, we congratulated him as the move was close to completion, according to Schär himself. But afterwards, things changed quickly.
“My agent told me that Arsenal officials came many times to watch Schär but they were impressed every time by my performances and development and they went on to sign me instead.”
In the end, Fabian Schar was snapped up by German Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, but he probably stares at the ceiling at night wondering what might have been!
What do you think of Elneny’s comments? And has his calmness and composure brought something unique to Arsenal’s slick midfield?
