Rio Ferdinand has chinned Steven Gerrard for not telling him he was retiring – a day after they sat together as BT Sport pundits.
Hanging them up
Liverpool legend Gerrard officially hung up his boots today, calling time on an illustrious and trophy-laden career.
The former England captain – who played the final two seasons of his career in the MLS with LA Galaxy – has received hundreds of tributes from his fellow professionals.
Team-mates from down the years have taken to social media to pay tribute to the Anfield icon.
Why didn’t you tell me?
But his old England pal Ferdinand joked that he was annoyed Gerrard hadn’t spilled the beans over his decision to retire earlier.
Gerrard kept tight-lipped over the news even though he sat right next to his old Manchester United rival on BT Sport’s Champions League panel on Wednesday night.
Ferdinand did eventually get around to congratulating Gerrard, saying: “Big congratulations on a fantastic career.. pleasure to play alongside you for England and against you in Manchester United v Liverpool battles. All the best on your next chapter.”
Gerrard had been linked with the manager’s job at MK Dons but opted to turn the role down.
But Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp today revealed that the door would always be open for Gerrard to return to the club.
