Video: Benfica Youngster Scores Outrageous Volley From His Own Half

Benfica star Gedson Fernandes channelled his inner-David Beckham this afternoon, when he scored a scintillating half-volley against Besiktas.

Fernandes played a key role for the Águias, as they eased to a 3-0 victory over their Turkish opposition in the UEFA youth league.

The tournament features the youth sides of all the teams currently competing in the Champions League.

And Fernades’ outrageous strike helped Benfica pick up three crucial points, meaning the Portuguese side currently sit second in Group B, three points behind Dynamo Kyiv’s youngsters.

Jose Gomes and Ricardo Araujo managed to get on the scoresheet for Benfica, but it was Fernandes’ strike which stole the show as he capitalised on a woeful goalkeeping error.

As the ball dropped into Benfica’s half, Ferdnandes realised the Besiktas goalkeeper had left his goal totally abandoned, before executing the perfect half-volley that dipped just under the crossbar:

Dejan Stankovic, Xabi Alonso and Beckham all scored similar goals in their careers.

However the fact that Fernandes, at such a young age, had the presence of mind to score such a unique goal is surely a promising sign for his future.
