Argentina captain Leo Messi has taken the extraordinary step of announcing that he and his international team-mates won’t be speaking to the country’s press for the time being.

Messi played in last night’s crucial 3-0 victory at home to Colombia in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, with the South Americans far from sure of a place at the tournament in Russia.

And it appears the stresses and strains of the outside world have been getting to the Argentinians, with the surprising announcement made by Messi following the win:

The decision to boycott the media comes after reports that Ezequiel Lavezzi was caught smoking marijuana in the team’s hotel base prior to the Colombia match – a claim which has obviously been refuted by the player and his team-mates.

The victory leaves Argentina fifth in the Conmebol qualifying group, which is one of the play-off places, and they remain a massive eight points behind league leaders and bitter rivals Brazil.

What do you think of Messi’s speech?
