Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres Pay Tribute to Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard announced his retirement earlier today and two of his former team-mates at Liverpool were among the first to take to social media to pay tribute to the former England captain.

In a long and emotional Instagram post, Gerrard revealed he was hanging up his boots and said an announcement on his next move would be made soon.

But as we wait to find out what lies in store for Gerrard’s future, many have simply been expressing thanks for some of the brilliant memories the midfielder gave them during his time at Anfield.

In the middle of the park, Gerrard struck up a golden relationship with Xabi Alonso, and the pair formed the backbone of the 2005 Champions League winning side, whilst Fernando Torres was the beneficiary of many Gerrard assists over the years:

It’s easy to forget how formidable that Liverpool team was – and incredible to think they never managed to win a Premier League!
