Arsene Wenger Says Chelsea Stopped Arsenal Signing Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku might have been an Arsenal player today had Arsene Wenger got his way, the Gunners boss has revealed.

Wenger and his Arsenal side will come up against Lukaku and his Everton team-mates this evening at Goodison Park in a potentially crucial match for both sides.

The Belgian striker has cemented himself as one of the Premier League’s most-feared marksman since moving to the Toffees several years ago, scoring 28 goals for club and country last season, as well as 14 in 18 appearances this season.

But had things gone a little different, the 23-year-old might have been taking to the field tonight wearing red and white instead of royal blue.

Speaking via, Wenger explained: “I knew him when he played in Belgium.

“He came to Chelsea very early and, once a player is at a big London club, it’s difficult for us to get him.”

The Frenchman stopped short of offering any more details on any proposed deal, but the fact he mentions ‘getting’ Lukaku definitely implies that he’d like to have signed him.

In the end, it didn’t quite work out at Chelsea for Lukaku but time is on his side, and it remains to be seen if he’ll still be an Everton player next season if the club fails to challenge for big honours come May.

How would Lukaku have fared at Arsenal?
