Rooney has lost his starting place in the United team since Jose Mourinho arrived in the summer, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic currently occupying the two roles Rooney tends to play in.
And after selling Gonzalo Higuaín to Juventus last summer, Napoli are definitely on the lookout for a new striker.
Initially, the Naples club signed Arkadiusz Milik as a replacement for Higuaín, but he Polish international has injured his knee ligaments and is unlikely to feature again this season.
Speaking on Italian radio station Radio CRC, respected agent Vincenzo Morabito insisted, via the Sport Bible, that Rooney was in the frame.
He said: “I know for a fact that he was offered to Napoli as he can’t go to other English clubs, which could lead him to Spain and Italy.
“He was, I repeat, offered to Napoli.
“While the idea is beautiful, reality isn’t when you look at his €10m-a-year salary.
“He certainly doesn’t have a good relationship with Mourinho, and therefore his future is far from United, even on loan, to give them more room.”
Given that Rooney is just two goals away from becoming United’s all-time top scorer, we can’t really envisage him leaving until that record is tied-up.
But is there any chance a player like Rooney would go and try his luck in Italy? Could he thrive in a slower footballing environment?
