Cristiano Ronaldo was announced the winner of the France Football award yesterday, beating Lionel Messi by 429 points.
It’s the Real Madrid man’s fourth time picking up the gong and tops off a memorable year in which he won the Champions League with his club and the European Championship with his country.
Messi and Antoine Griezmann completed the top three and there was controversy about who ranked elsewhere – most notably Jamie Vardy finishing above stars like Luka Modric and Robert Lewandowski.
But what about those players who didn’t even get a vote?
The vote is decided by 173 journalists from around the world and, of the 30-man shortlist, there were 11 players who got no points.
According to dailymail.co.uk, those are: Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Paulo Dybala, Diego Godin, Gonzalo Higuain, Andres Iniesta, Koke, Hugo Lloris, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer and Sergio Ramos.
It’s surprising to see Aguero get no votes considering he’s scored 36 goals in 2016 and is one of Manchester City’s main man.
Andres Iniesta is a notable one because he’s ranked high in the list over his career, while Manuel Neuer gets nowhere near despite being arguably the best goalkeeper on the planet.
And what about Ramos? He was pivotal as Madrid won the Champions League and even scored in the final. But he still gets no votes.
What’s your view – did Ronaldo deserve top spot?
