Mamadou Sakho appears up for grabs this month – but who would be the best fit for the Liverpool man?
He hasn’t kicked a ball for the club since last year’s UEFA doping ban and his banishing from the first team by Jurgen Klopp.
So not everyone will be in the market for the French defender.
Here we give you three of the most realistic teams who could sign Sakho:
If Jose Fonte wasn’t trying to force his way out of Southampton, we wouldn’t be linking Sakho there. But the Portuguese defender appears to be heading for the St Mary’s exit door this month and it leaves the club needing a replacement soon. Virgil van Dijk is a centre back too good not to have a top quality partner – and we’re not sure Maya Yoshida is up to the level. Imagine the elegant van Dijk next to the powerful Sakho? Southampton certainly have money to spend and could meet Liverpool’s asking price.
Bournemouth are in the market for a central defender after Nathan Ake was recalled by Chelsea from his season-long loan at the club. Reports have linked them with a loan move for John Terry, but that appears a none starter given this could be the Blues captain’s final season as a player. Sakho could be more realistic given Liverpool’s inability to move him on for a decent price this month. Instead, a loan switch may suit both parties – and Sakho would be a real star upgrade for the Cherries.
This is probably the most unrealistic move of the three, but if Sakho wants to get his confidence back while staying close to Liverpool, Rangers could be an option on loan. The team haven’t been very convincing at centre back this season and Sakho would be an improvement on Rob Kiernan, Danny Wilson and Clint Hill. Mark Warburton has to add some serious quality to his team and Sakho would provide that.
