The Derry City manager was watching on as Celtic beat Rangers 2-1 in the Hogmanay clash between the teams at Ibrox.
And, like many others, he was impressed with the performance of McKay, despite the disappointing overall display of his team.
McKay revealed Brendan Rodgers’ praise for him after the game – and Shiels has followed that up with more plaudits. But we’re not sure any Celtic fans will agree with his comments.
According to the former Kilmarnock boss, McKay is just as good as anything Celtic have got in the wide areas and actually brings more to a team than rival wingers Forrest or Roberts do.
Shiels, per thescottishsun.co.uk, said: “He’s every bit as good as Celtic’s attacking players in the wide areas.
“Folk might wonder about that, but I’d say he’s ahead of James Forrest and Patrick Roberts in terms of what he can bring to a team. His change of pace is better, his ability with the ball is better.
“I can’t believe clubs in England aren’t sniffing around, to be honest.
“He has great ability and I’m really surprised that there haven’t been Premier League clubs in England looking at him because he is the one Scottish player playing in the Scottish Premiership that you’d say: ‘I’d like to go and watch him.’
“He’s brave on the ball and that’s something he’s always had. He’s a natural footballer and a tremendous player.”
Those are some strong words, considering how important both Forrest and Roberts have been for Celtic on their way to being unbeaten domestically this season.
McKay has three goals and six assists for Rangers this season, which is better than the three goals and three assists of Roberts, but not as good as the six goals and eight assists Forrest has for the Hoops so far.
What’s your view – is McKay better than the Celtic pair?
