How can we not rate a guy that scored 34 goals in all competitions during 2016 top of our list?
While there may be some raised eyebrows that man of the moment Moussa Dembele doesn’t come in first, there shouldn’t be. Dembele might be the one grabbing the headlines right now, but he was just a promising player in the Championship with Fulham when Griffiths was firing Celtic to the five-in-a-row last term.
As we’ve already written, this is a vote for the best player of 2016 and for 12 months Griffiths has been the main man at Parkhead. His 34 goals simply top a year which saw him really come of age in Hoops. Not only did that tally take him to 40 for the season, he laid on eight for his team-mates and picked up three end-of-season awards, including the PFA Player of the Year.
Those are the tangibles, the intangibles are Griffiths’ big performances in big games and those stats don’t reflect him playing second fiddle to Dembele for the second half of the year. If the French striker shows the consistency of his team-mate over 2017 then there’s no doubt he’ll top this list a year from now, but he’s still got it to do.
So it gives us great pleasure to crown Griffiths Scotland’s best player in 2016 – there’s no doubting he deserves it.

What They Said
“Without his goals in the first half of the year, the title race might well have been a close run thing.”
