Way back – many years ago – I had a boss who knew Ken Buchanan. Alongside me was someone who had trials and fought for the Scottish kendo squad. Days upon hours were spent with the two of them debating until they just traded insults, over whether a boxer or a martial artist was the deadliest. In the end the rest of us agreed the deadliest topic of conversation as their argument.
And so, let us turn to Conor MacGregor. And Floyd Mayweather Jr. And Pauli Malignaggi. And now, for heaven’s sake Ricardo Mayorga. MacGregor wants to fight Mayweather, Mayweather has offered him $Millions to do it, Malignaggi says he will do it and now Mayorga has stepped into the metaphorical ring.
I have nothing against MMA. I do not follow it through choice as it has not managed to entice me in but I would never dismiss it or cast a dismissive glance towards it. It is a sport, a combat sport with people putting their lives on the line to prove they are the ultimate in their weight class and under the rules of the sport in which they operate.
For me MMA is to boxing what badminton or squash is to tennis. They share similarities but they are not in the same financial league; yet.
The greatest disservice to your sport is, in my humble opinion, when people think that someone in one sport has the ability to cross over and, without any real preparation, conquer the other. It also does a disservice to those people in their own sport. It is saying to them, nobody is good enough for me so I have to look outside of our discipline for a challenge.
I have no interest in the crossovers unless it is Law and Order and Chicago PD.
I remember the bizarre matchup between some Chinese martial artist and Muhammad Ali. It did nothing for either and nothing for either sport.
My advice to MacGregor is go beat the guy who beat you and sweep up your sport. To Malignaggi get in the ring with a champion and show just how good you are! For Mayweather Jr – keep enjoying that retirement and every so on come out and say things that keep us typing…
Just who is this Mayorga?
He is a Nicaraguan former boxing champion. His career has taken a bit of a stutter so stunts seem to be his career pathway now; and not always tasteful ones. He used Twitter – who doesn’t these days – to call out MacGregor. What makes it more absurd is the level down to which Mayorga tries to go to get a response. What is a “real Latino”?
Mayorga is no stranger to MMA and has been in an MMA ring. He even won his debut albeit in controversial circumstances at home; it was overturned and ruled a no contest. He then lost 3 MMA fights and before returning to boxing.
He got a couple of wins before Shane Mosley knocked him out in 2015.
He has kept things low since then but can be found on social media with a variety of strange and less than memorable posts. He managed to hit the headlines again though when he was arrested in November 2015 when he was linked to the murder of a police horse…
It is now clear he thinks that riding on the back of a payday with an MMA fighter, after having got chased out of both rings, is a good career move. I don’t think anyone is wishing him any kind of success soon.
