Lothar Matthaus Claims Liverpool Shouldn’t Sign Mario Gotze Because He’s Slow

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has thrown cold water on reports linking Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze with a summer move to Liverpool.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp managed Gotze during his time at Dortmund, with the pair winning two Bundesliga titles and a German Cup together.

However, despite several sources linking the Germany international with a transfer to the Premier League, Matthaus believes Gotze’s lack of pace means he should move to China instead.

Speaking in an interview with BILD, Matthaus claimed it would be “pathetic” for a 24-year-old to consider a move to China – but it may be the only option open to the player who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final:

“It may sound hard, but if Gotze does not succeed at Dortmund, he should go to China.”

Matthaus, who made over 150 appearances for the German national team added, “He cannot earn the same at Schalke 04, does not fit with Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach has not enough money.”

“Top teams from abroad will not be interested in him, but it is clear that for Götze something has to change. He lacks speed and that is very important in modern football.”

Liverpool fans, would you be interested in signing Gotze this summer?

Or is Matthaus right in believing that the player would only slow down the team’s attack?
