In this edition of Goal Line Grumblings, we’ll update you on a few different announcements that have taken place over the past couple of days. These announcements pertain to an injury involving a certain star goalie, as well as a suspension. Plus, we’ll update you on the status of Winnpeg Jets defenseman Tobias Enstrom.
Henrik Lundqvist Out for Two to Three Weeks
New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is among one of the top goaltenders in the league when he’s healthy. However, the Rangers were dealt a blow this weekend when it was announced that Lundqvist was ruled out for two to three weeks with a lower-body injury. But, the Rangers losing the veteran goaltender for the final stretch of the regular season may be a blessing in disguise.
The Rangers have relied on Lundqvist in the playoffs and losing him for the majority of the rest of the regular season could mean he’s fresh for the playoffs. Also worth noting is that the Rangers have a comfortable lead on the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, and barring anything catastrophic, they should keep it.
In the mean time, backup Antti Raanta will serve as the starter, with Rangers recalling Magnus Hellberg from the Hartford Wolfpack, their AHL affiliate.
Tobias Enstrom Out with Concussion; Shattenkirk Suspended Two Games
Earlier, we reported that Tom Sestito was suspended for his hit on Tobias Enstrom in the Pittsburgh-Winnipeg game. As it turns, Enstrom was injured suffered a concussion from the blindside hit and will be out indefinitely until he is cleared by the NHL’s concussion protocol.
Washington Capitals defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk was suspended for two games for charging LA Kings defenseman Kevin Gravel. Shattenkirk was also fined $47,222.22 for the hit. Gravel was retrieving a puck when Shattenkirk leaped into a hit, which is considered charging.
