Walter Mazzarri Jokes Troy Deeney Must Score Weekly Hat-Tricks to Get England Call-Up

Watford boss Walter Mazzarri believes striker Troy Deeney faces a serious battle if he’s to make his way into Gareth Southgate’s England team.

Deeney is yet to receive a call-up to the national side, with England blessed with a plethora of attacking talent including Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane and Daniel Sturridge.

However, with all three out for England’s friendly against Germany, Southgate appears willing to experiment as he’s issued a recall to forgotten man Jermaine Defoe.

There is still no room for Deeney though, despite the Watford front-man having scored five goals in his last seven games for the Hornets.

Deeney’s most recent snub has clearly caught the eye of Mazzarri who joked the player may need to score three goals every week to make a splash on the England set-up.

When asked about Deeney’s lack of caps, Mazzarri said: “You should ask the England manager these questions.

“All I can say is that for me he always plays and at this moment in time, Deeney is in his best form and scoring goals.”

The former Inter Milan boss joked, “I do everything I can to help my team, so of course I’ll tell him from now on that he needs to score three goals in each game because one is not enough.

“Also, if he manages to score three goals then there is more of a chance that we can win.”

Watford travel to Crystal Palace tomorrow afternoon, will we see Deeney score a barrel-load and draw Southgate’s attention?
