Steven Thompson Says Brendan Rodgers’ Praise of St Mirren is a Joke

Steven Thompson believes Brendan Rodgers’ praise that St Mirren are the best Scottish side Celtic have played this season is a joke.

The former Rangers and Buddies striker now works for BBC Scotland and was watching on yesterday as his old team performed well against the Hoops.

It did end 4-1 to the hosts in their Scottish Cup quarter-final clash at Celtic Park, but Jack Ross’ men acquitted themselves very well, frustrating their opponents in the first half and going into half-time 1-0 up thanks to Harry Davis’ goal.

That’s the first time Celtic have been losing at the break at home since 2014 – which is testament to the way Ross has the Saints playing despite them occupying the bottom spot in the Championship.

Post-match, Rodgers said they were the best team Celtic have faced domestically this season.

But Thompson, who spent five years in black and white, believes that’s a joke statement considering the quality of Aberdeen or Rangers:

Celtic have played Rangers three times already and won all of them, including a 5-1 demolition of Mark Warburton’s team in September, while Aberdeen have lost their four matches against them.

So St Mirren’s result yesterday was no worse than what Aberdeen or Rangers have been on the receiving end of from Rodgers’ side this term.

His comments should simply come as a boost to St Mirren, who need all the confidence they can get if they’re to claw back the five-point gap to Ayr in the Championship relegation fight.
