The former Ajax captain scored a decent six goals in his first season at White Hart Lane back in the 2012/13 campaign, but things have dried up considerably since then.
Remarkably, the 29-year-old hasn’t scored competitively for Spurs since the 2-0 Europa League win over Sheriff Tiraspol back in October 2013, and he hasn’t found the net for his country Belgium since November 2015.
And following yesterday’s 3-2 victory over Everton, Vertonghen revealed how his inefficiency in front of goal has left him the butt of the joke amongst his colleagues.
Speaking via the Evening Standard, he said: “The lads were making fun of me because I haven’t scored in a while.
“I tried today, unfortunately it didn’t happen. But my goals will come.
“I was extremely tired on the pitch because I was going forward too much a bit. I’m tired, but also happy with the win.”
To be honest, we would’ve fully expected at least a couple of goals per season from a high-profile player like Vertonghen, and it seems it’s starting to play on his mind somewhat.
Did you realise it’s almost four years since his last goal? Should he be scoring more?
