Gary Neville Suggests Man Utd’s Next Captain…And Fans Aren’t Happy

Gary Neville has tipped David de Gea to become Manchester United‘s next permanent captain from next season – much to the annoyance of some of the club’s supporters.

With Wayne Rooney’s time at the club apparently drawing to a close, the Red Devils will need to appoint a skipper to replace Rooney, and without that many senior players, it could be a tricky decision for Jose Mourinho.

A few years ago, with the likes of Scholes, Giggs and even Neville himself, selecting a new captain would’ve been a doddle, but if Rooney does leave in the summer, the armband’s next destination remains unclear.

During a Twitter Q&A earlier today, Neville was asked who he’d select, and after plumping for de Gea, he was instantly met with derision:

Of course, as recently as today, David de Gea has once again been strongly linked with a return to his native Spain with Real Madrid – a move the goalkeeper doesn’t seem entirely against.

So what do you make of Neville’s suggestion? Could handing de Gea the extra responsibility perhaps keep him at Old Trafford?
