PSG trailed league leaders Monaco by three points prior to their match with FC Metz, placing the pressure firmly on the visitors to close the gap at the top.
And first-half goals from Edinson Cavani and Matuidi appeared to have the champions on course for victory, until Metz scored twice through Yann Jouffre and Cheick Diabate.
Luckily for PSG, Matuidi was on hand to grab his second of the evening, as he guided an inch-perfect header into the Metz goal… sending his teammates on the bench into dreamland.
The result means that Monaco and PSG both sit on 77 points, however, Monaco have a superior goal difference and still have a game in hand against St-Etienne.
Before that though, Radamel Falcao and his teammates play Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their Champions League quarter final.
