Scott McDonald Backs James Forrest to Start Ahead of Patrick Roberts vs Rangers

Ex-Celtic striker Scott McDonald believes Brendan Rodgers should go with James Forrest instead of Patrick Roberts for this weekend’s Scottish Cup semi-final vs Rangers.

If the Hoops can get past Pedro Caixinha’s side at Hampden, the Scottish champions will be one game away from clinching a domestic treble.

And with that in mind, there’s a great deal of importance being placed on who Rodgers’ picks to start out wide at Hampden.

Motherwell forward McDonald believes that despite the impact Roberts is making when he comes off the bench, Rodgers will stick to the “tried and trusted” 11 and select Forrest ahead of the Manchester City loanee.

Speaking on the Ladbrokes Football Show, McDonald said, “Well I think he [Rodgers] goes Forrest all day long for this one.

“Even though Roberts when he’s coming on he seems to be making a fantastic impact.”

The Australian also eluded to Moussa Dembele’s downturn in form recently as to why Roberts has been given more of a chance, however, he still thinks Celtic will keep to the XI which won them the title.

He added, “I think Dembele’s form hasn’t been as good as what it has been over the course of the season the last sort of four to five weeks.

But there’s no question it’ll be the tried and trusted come Sunday. It’ll be one-to-11 the same strong 11 that’s been playing all season long for me.”

What do we think Celtic fans, is McDonald right in backing Forrest to start?

Or would you rather see Roberts being handed a starting berth against Rangers?
