Martin O’Neill’s men went into the crucial 2018 World Cup qualifier against Austria at the Aviva Stadium knowing a victory was pretty essential to their bid to reach next year’s tournament in Russia.
But an impressive start by the Austrians was eventually rewarded by a goal from Martin Hinteregger, and a mere glance at social media will quickly tell you who the Irish fall-guy is.
He was eventually subbed in the second-half bit it’s probably for the best if Glenn Whelan avoids Twitter for the next few days – for his own good, really:
Omg about fkn time whelan off wat a fraud of a player

Feel like I've been saying this for years now, but surely this country can produce a better midfielder than Glenn Whelan? #Shocking

You get the gist of it. What a reaction, eh?
Tonight’s match was Whelan’s 81st cap for the Republic but at the age of 33, and judging by the reaction, it’s unlikely he’ll be adding many more to his tally.
What do you make of the criticism?
