Jean-Kévin Duverne has emerged as the next player reportedly on Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic wishlist this summer.
The Hoops manager made his first signing of the off-season this afternoon when Jonny Hayes’ move from Aberdeen was confirmed by the club.
That’s a strong signing considering the Irish winger’s performances for a Dons side that pushed Celtic in the league and cups last season, despite the Glasgow side completing an unbeaten domestic treble with the 2-1 Scottish Cup win at Hampden last month.
But supporters will be keen to see new players come in the door who can improve Celtic in Europe after their domestic domination.
And, according to express.co.uk, Duverne could be heading to Celtic Park in a £4.8m deal this summer.
Is Duverne someone who could take the team forward though? Here’s what we know about the defender:
1 – He’s French and plays centre back
Lens appeared to play a back three last season and Duverne – who has no youth recognition from France – lined up in the middle of that. He obviously did well too, with his side narrowly missing out on promotion and having shipped just 40 goals in the league – the joint fourth best defensive record in Ligue 2. Despite what reports say, he doesn’t appear to be a left back.
2 – He could have been a Ligue 1 player right now
Had Lens got just one more point at the end of the Ligue 2 season, they’d now be a Ligue 1 team and Duverne would be a top flight player. Unfortunately, Lens missed out on the play-offs and automatic promotion by just one point.
3 – He’s a stopper
Watching this, Duverne looks like a stopper rather than a ball-playing centre back.
4 – He’s had one full season of first team football
From the limited information out there about Duverne, it looks like he’s had just one full season of first team football. He played 36 times for Lens throughout the last campaign so is undoubtedly an important part of the top team squad. But beyond that there isn’t much experience.
5 – He’s on Twitter and Facebook
The lack of information about Duverne make us question just what Celtic have seen to be willing to spend £4.8million on the defender. That’s a lot of money for even the Scottish champions and we’d expect to have heard more about the Frenchman if he’s worth that sort of fee.
