As we told you at the time, Tiote was training with his current club Beijing Enterprises when he unexpectedly collapsed and died. He was rushed to hospital but nothing could be done, and Tiote was pronounced dead at the age of just 30.
He was best known to football fans in the UK as a Newcastle United player, where he spent almost seven years, and for some of that time he was partnered in the middle of the park by Barton.
He seemed saddened as he paid his own respects on social media tonight:
How I'll always remember him. As someone you'd want in the trenches alongside you. RIP Cheiky ? https://t.co/crESQc0mpC

Members of the larger football community have also paid their respects but this coming from somebody who shared so many battles on the pitch with Tiote feels a little more poignant.
He was best remembered perhaps for his stunning goal in the memorable 4-4 draw with Arsenal back in 2011 – but what are your memories of Tiote?
