Saul Niguez scored a lovely individual goal to open the scoring for Spain‘s Under 21s against Portugal this evening.

The Atletico Madrid man is captaining the Spanish team at the European Championships in Poland and was integral as they beat Macedonia 5-0 in their opening game last week.

With Macedonia and Serbia the other teams in the group, the game against Portugal was always going to be the most important.

And Spain got off to the perfect start tonight as Niguez beat four Portuguese players before firing home with the help of a little deflection:

How good is that? Given Niguez’s 51 games for Atletico last season, and three senior team caps, he probably shouldn’t even be playing for the Under 21s. And it shows.

Diego Simeone obviously rates the midfielder highly and Atletico will no doubt face a big challenge in keeping him at the club over the next few seasons.

A winning U21 European Championships for Spain would certainly make it even harder.
