Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather: The Saga Begins

Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather: The Saga Begins

The long-awaited Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor boxing match is officially happening, and the first act of the proverbial circus has already come and gone.  The pair hosted their first, and second joint press conferences since the announcement of the fight back in late June.

The lead-up has been strange, to say the least.  The American IRS claim that Floyd Mayweather owes millions on his 2015 taxes, and McGregor posting on his social media various Rocky quotes and even a large mural at his home gym, SBG in Ireland, of him delivering a stout left-hand to Floyd’s jaw.

The first press conference took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and acted as the first stop on a media tour that would span the world, with many calling it “The Mayweather-McGregor World Tour.”  The press conference started as any other, with members of the media vying to ask the polarizing figures questions about the upcoming bout.

Then, the theatrics ensued.

Floyd claimed that they could fight with 4-ounce gloves, the standard weight of an MMA glove, and he’d still KO McGregor clean.

Both had an intense stare-down that saw Mayweather stand perfectly still, as if an icy statue, while McGregor grinned and bobbed and weaved with his hands out, the look of a madman on his face.

The theatrics even extended to the American and Irishman’s wardrobe.  Mayweather donned his trademark TMT-branded hoodie and hat, while McGregor donned a signature suit, albeit with a very interesting pinstripe pattern.  To the naked eye, they looked like tribal pinstripes, but upon closer inspection, the stripes actually read “F*** You” up and down the coat.  At one point, even Floyd Sr. stepped in, claiming he could knock McGregor out himself.

With the first stop on the Mayweather-McGregor press tour complete, the second leg shifted to Toronto, Canada.  Any reservedness that either of the two brash fighters showed was left behind in LA, as Floyd came out once again in a TMT-branded hoodie and hat, this time bearing the Canadian flag in the letters.

Floyd and Conor stood still, the two competitors staring with icy stares at the other, with Floyd extending his finger, pointing it directly at McGregor while the Irishman extended his arm and curled his fingers, waving Floyd to come to him.

Then, they decided to hand over the microphones.  Conor berated everybody not named the UFC, the fans, or Conor McGregor, firing off numerous expletives and demanding somebody, namely Mayweather, come and physically take the mic from him.  Then, the Irishman called Floyd out on his subpar reading skills.  T

The first press conference caught McGregor off guard, his trash talk wasn’t the best.  But the press conference in Toronto has been some of Conor McGregor’s best trash talk yet.

“He’s 40!  He’s 40 years of age!  Dress your f****** age!”  McGregor yelled as he taunted Floyd about his TMT brand.

But Mac wasn’t done.

“Why have you got a schoolbag?! You can’t even read!!!”  McGregor shouted, as the crowd began shouting “pay your taxes.”  A reference to Floyd’s recent dispute with the IRS.

Then, everything just got weird.

Mayweather grabbed an Irish flag, and Conor grabbed Floyd’s backpack, making fun of the fact that there was only around $5,000 US dollars in the bag, Floyd then made fun of Conor always wearing a suit, claiming that men who had money didn’t need to wear suits (and by that logic, I’m a billionaire.)

Finally, the pair had the final face-off, and the second act of the Mayweather-McGregor world came to a close.  Many on social media think that Conor took the second round of the trash-talk, as the Toronto crowd was partisan towards McGregor, with fans even going so far as to chant “UFC! UFC! UFC!”

Who “won” each round of trash talk? How will the highly-anticipated fight turn out?  Let us know in the comments below what you think!
