Arsenal centre-half Per Mertesacker has posted a classy message to the club’s supporters after he was appointed the club’s Academy Manager – although there will still be plenty of chances to see the German in action before he hangs up his boots.
The World Cup winner spent the vast majority of last season injured and on the treatment table, but his surprising and excellent performance in the FA Cup final in May served as a timely reminder to supporters about just how important a leader Mertesacker is.
It was revealed today that he will retire in the summer of 2018, and he will then become the club’s academy director.
He posted this on Twitter earlier this afternoon:
As you can imagine, Arsenal fans seem pretty delighted to see one of their own take on such a crucial role within the Emirates:

The romantic in me would've loved to have seen Bergkamp back as a first-team coach or as Head of Academy but Lehmann/Mertesacker are class.

Overall Mertesacker is easily one of Wenger's best ever signings. Arrived during one of the worst periods of the club and brought stability.
