Celtic smashed nine goals past Shamrock Rovers this afternoon as they prepared perfectly for Linfield.

The Hoops will face the Northern Irish champions in Belfast next week hoping to kick off their Champions League qualifying campaign with a commanding performance and win.

So a strong display against the League of Ireland outfit in Dublin would have been welcome for Brendan Rodgers’ team.

What they produced was more than that, putting Rovers to the sword with a scintillating attacking display.

And it must have Linfield worried about what could happen if Celtic click next week at Windsor Park.

It all started with Mikael Lustig latching on to James Forrest’s pass to slide home:

Stuart Armstrong got the second, running on to a bad Shamrock clearance to power the ball home:

Moussa Dembele then got in on the act as he tapped home Kieran Tierney’s cross from the left:

And Scott Sinclair’s first of the afternoon was similar, with Tierney firing across goal for the English winger to tap home:

So, at half-time Celtic had a 4-0 lead, but you’d expect Shamrock Rovers to come out and be a lot more organised in order to keep the score down, wouldn’t you? Well, that didn’t happen.

James Forrest made it 5-0 on the hour mark before Rodgers made a number of substitutions:

Sinclair then got his second of the game as he latched on to Leigh Griffiths’ long ball over the top to round the goalkeeper and pass home:

Armstrong doubled up on his tally too, finishing a neat move to make it 7-0:

Jonny Hayes was a second half substitute and he scored the first goal of his Hoops career to make it 8-0:

And it was left to Rogic to head home the ninth goal of the afternoon and complete the scoring for the Hoops:

This is not the sort of form Linfield would have been hoping to see from Celtic less than a week before their Champions League game.
