Per Mertesacker scored a lovely goal for Arsenal in their pre-season friendly against Sydney – but it wasn’t an overhead kick.

The German defender was named in the starting XI by Arsene Wenger for his side’s clash against The Sky Blues this morning.

And it took him just four minutes to make an impact, hooking home the opening goal.

Arsenal’s official Twitter page described it as an overhead kick, but we think that’s being very kind to the big German centre back:

Arsenal will be hoping they can hit some good form in pre-season to take into their Community Shield clash with Chelsea and first Premier League game against Leicester.

Wenger has already added Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac to his squad this summer and there will no doubt be more to come before the season gets underway.

As for Mertesacker, it’s his final season as an Arsenal player before he goes on to take the club’s academy manager role.
