Rangers are among the teams looking to do some late business before the transfer window slams shut.
The highest profile signing of this week came on the other side of Glasgow when Celtic announced Patrick Roberts’ return to the club on a season-long loan.
And many still expect the Hoops to be active before tomorrow night’s deadline.
But Rangers should be involved in the action too as they look to complete a busy summer of signings.
While fans speculate over who could be added by Pedro Caixinha, we look at five players who could realistically be in the door at Ibrox before the deadline:
Jamie Walker
His name has been mentioned regularly alongside Rangers throughout the transfer window, but, so far, Hearts have been unwilling to do business. With a year left on his contract, Walker could sign a pre-contract this January and ensure the Jambos receive nothing for developing him. So perhaps they’ll decide to cash in at the last moment and allow Rangers a player they clearly want. From the fans’ reaction, that would be a popular move in the blue side of Glasgow.
Louis Moult
At one stage of the transfer window it looked like Moult wouldn’t be a Motherwell player for long, but somehow the Fir Park outfit have managed to hold on to their star striker. There was clear interest from Aberdeen and Rangers have consistently been linked with the Englishman yet the Steelmen have stood firm. So it’s likely he’ll remain at Motherwell, but it can’t be completely dismissed as a non-starter ahead of deadline day. Moult is guaranteed goals in the Premiership and that’s something Rangers need. It’ll be about how much money they can spend which dictates whether or not they can get Moult though.
Rickie Lambert
There are definite doubts over Lambert and his fitness, but surely a striker with his experience and quality could interest Rangers? He’s been without a club since leaving Cardiff in the summer and hasn’t signed for anyone else, despite speculation linking him with a number of English clubs. But imagine Lambert as a backup to Alfredo Morelos and Eduardo Herrera? Or even as a competitor for the starting striker spot? Rangers, and a lot of other clubs, could go a lot worse than the former Southampton, Liverpool, West Brom and England man.
Declan John
Unlike the three previous, there’s little to know about John at the moment – but reportedly he’s on the verge of a loan move to Rangers. He’s 22, has made 52 appearances for Cardiff and has experience from loans with Barnsley and Chesterfield over recent seasons. Given he’s a Wales international too, Rangers look like they’d be getting a talent and that’s the sort of signings fans will be expecting to see on a regular basis under Caixinha. This is one we fully expect to go through.
Callum McManaman
If Rangers are to bridge the gap to Celtic, and even Aberdeen, then they’ll have to sign players of similar quality to McManaman – so why not go for the man himself if he’s available? He’s got loads of Premier League experience, strengthens the squad at left wing and is clearly not wanted by Tony Pulis at West Brom – so maybe Rangers could steal in there with a loan or move permanently for a player whose contract expires next summer?
Rangers fans – who would you like to see signed?
