The Spanish international is back in his homeland of Brazil and has no appetite to return to Stamford Bridge after being told he’s no longer wanted by Antonio Conte.
He’s still under contract though, and Chelsea have told him that they want him back training.
But Costa won’t be doing that – as he confirmed in a statement while saying that Atletico Madrid is the team he’s going to play for.
Speaking to the Brazilian FA, Costa, per reddit.com, said: ‘My destination is already made. I must return to Atletico Madrid.
“It turns out that there is the impasse that Chelsea does not want to release me. But I believe that this situation will be resolved now on my return to Spain.”
The problem for Costa is that Atletico are currently on a transfer ban after breaching FIFA rules on the signing of minors.
So the earliest opportunity for his former club to sign him would be the January transfer window – and that represents a short-term issue for both player and club.
Costa can’t possibly be AWOL in Brazil for the first half of the season given that he’s under contract with the English champions.
But his words suggest that it won’t be an easy fix if Chelsea do want him to return.
