Ex-Barca President Compares Neymar’s Departure to Luis Figo Leaving for Real Madrid

Ex-Barca President Compares Neymar’s Departure to Luis Figo Leaving for Real Madrid

Former Barcelona president Joan Gaspart claims Neymar’s PSG move mirrors the controversial transfer which saw Luis Figo leave the Nou Camp for Real Madrid.

It’s understood that all the pieces are in place for Neymar to sign a deal at the Ligue 1 champions, however, La Liga officials are slowing down the deal over issues with his £198m buyout clause.

Although this appears to be a minor speed-bump, with Barcelona reportedly keen to move the player on and look toward replacing the Brazil international.

However, despite Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez coming out in recent days to send messages of support to Neymar, Gaspart has moved to criticise the 25-year-old.

Gaspart was the club’s president when Figo decided to leave Barcelona for rivals Real Madrid, a move which infuriated the club’s supporters and resulted in the ex-Portugal star forever receiving a frosty reception in Catalonia.

And according to Gaspart, Neymar will move into the same bracket as Figo when his move is complete.

Speaking to Cadena SER, he said, “”I’ve seen similar situations but Neymar is in the same boat as Figo, who was alone but now has Neymar for company.

“I’ve seen great players like [Diego] Maradona and Ronaldo, who were better than Neymar, also leave Barca because other clubs paid their clauses.

“But they went with dignity, without making so much fuss. I’ve not liked his [Neymar’s] attitude with the club, with the supporters and with his teammates.”

He added, “Neymar’s the one to blame, full stop.

“It’s not Barca’s fault. It’s not the board’s fault. It’s not the players’ fault… they did everything for him to stay. It’s Neymar’s fault.”

Is Neymar’s decision to move to France really as bad as Figo deciding to swap Barcelona for their fiercest rivals?
