The UFC has officially added a women’s flyweight bout between Paige VanZant and Jessica Eye for UFC 216 on October 7. The bout will be “PVZ’s” UFC flyweight debut, which comes while VanZant is on a 1-2 slump at 115 lbs, due to this fight being at flyweight, VanZant will be moving up ten pounds for the fight. VanZant rocketed to fame with a highlight reel knockout of Bec Rawlings via head kick.
Since the Rawlings fight, “PVZ” has been 0-2 with loses to contenders Michelle Waterson and Rose Namajunas, both of which by rear-naked choke. After the Waterson fight, she changed fight camps from Team Alpha Male and moved back to her home state of Oregon.
Jessica Eye, meanwhile, has a 11-6 record, but her UFC career has been mired by losses. She has a 1-5-1 record in the UFC, with the one no contest coming after a win where Eye tested positive for marijuana in a post-fight drug test. Eye is a natural flyweight, while VanZant is moving down from strawweight. There is speculation that the UFC is giving VanZant an opponent in the midst of a slump in an effort to push her back into the spotlight.
The bout comes on a card that needs star power, as the main event is an interim lightweight title fight between Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee.
UFC 216 is due to take place on October 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
