Marko Arnautovic’s red card for an elbow on Southampton defender Jack Stephens was so stupid.
The West Ham attacker lasted just 33 minutes of his new side’s trip to St Mary’s after he planted an elbow on the side of Stephens’ face.
It’s an otherwise nothing incident, with the Southampton defender playing out from the back when Arnautovic steams in with his elbow.
And after seeing it connect with the centre back, referee Lee Mason had no doubts about sending Arnautovic off:
Just why does Arnautovic feel the need to do that when there’s no need. It’s not like his side are in danger of conceding – it was in their opponent’s half and nowhere near their goal.
It won’t make West Ham fans happy considering they were already behind to Manolo Gabbiadini’s opener.
And it only got worse minutes later when the hosts were given a penalty, which Dusan Tadic converted.
Chicharito has pulled a goal back before half-time, but West Ham will have a big job of getting back on level terms.
