Following his return to Manchester United this afternoon, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed the reason why he allowed new signing Romelu Lukaku to take his number nine shirt.

Ibrahimovic was released by United at the end of last season, with his career hanging in the balance following a severe knee injury.

And with United short of attacking options, Jose Mourinho pounced on the opportunity to sign Lukaku, shelling out £75 million on the ex-Everton striker.

However, Ibrahimovic has now revealed that when Lukaku arrived at Old Trafford, the Belgian international called him to ask if he could take the number nine jersey that he wore last season.

Speaking to ESPN, the former PSG front man revealed he gave Lukaku his approval… but mainly because he would be upgrading to the number 10 shirt anyway…

It remains to be seen just how big a part Ibrahimovic will play for United this season, with the ex-Sweden international still recovering from the knee injury which curtailed his first season in the Premier League.
