The Serbian midfielder has enjoyed a strong start to life as a Red Devils following his surprising £40 million transfer from Chelsea during the summer transfer window, and his cool and assured displays have led many fans to think he could help the club challenge for the Premier League title.
His idol was a man who knew how it felt to lift that famous trophy above his head on more than one occasion, with Roy Keane apparently the apple of Matic’s eye.
Speaking via the Mirror ahead of Serbia’s clash with Keane’s Ireland tonight, Matic said: “I will be happy to see him and have a chat with him.
“He is a legend of Man United and was a very important player for them for a long time.
“When I was young, when I started playing football, he was at his best and was a great player, one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
“I tried to take from every player something good to improve myself, and he was one. I am happy now that I play in the same club as he played.”
The two countries playoff in a vital match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin tonight – but forgive us for thinking Matic might be more preoccupied with meeting his hero!
Just imagine Matic and Keane in the same midfield – not THAT would take some penetrating!
