Kolo Toure Insists Kieran Tierney Can Be Every Bit as Good as Ashley Cole

Kolo Toure claims Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney can be every bit as good as his former Arsenal team-mate Ashley Cole if his career continues in the same direction.

Toure played alongside Cole during the early 2000s under Arsene Wenger, with both players going on to play a crucial role in the club’s historic ‘Invincible’ 2003/04 season.

And Toure had the honour of being an ‘Invincible’ twice, as he turned out for the Hoops, alongside Tierney, in their unbeaten domestic campaign last season.

Now Brendan Rodgers’ Technical Assistant at Parkhead, Toure insists he can see a lot of similarities between Tierney and Champions League winner Cole.

Speaking via the Herald, he said: “Kieran Tierney is a lot like Ashley Cole in the way that he bombs up and downs the flanks and that he is also so physically strong.

“He plays every game as well. He is not the tallest but he is a fighter and he is strong. He crosses, gets back and defends. He is a very, very good player.

“Can he reach Ashley Cole’s level one day? Yes, of course. He has such great potential.

“Kieran Tierney’s work rate is just amazing. He gives 100 per cent in every game, he makes lots of runs and makes lots of assists too.

“He defends, he goes forward, he is every inch the modern left back.

“He is playing his football for a great club like Celtic and his potential is really great too.

“But we want him to stay with Celtic as long as possible.

“When you saw the way he was passing the ball against Anderlecht it was just great.

Of course, now a veteran, Cole is actually still playing in the MLS with LA Galaxy but in his younger days he was unquestionably one of the world’s best left-backs.

Could Tierney really reach those heights? What do you think?
