Referee Steven McLean Absolutely Slaughtered After His Semi-Final Performance

Referee Steven McLean is at the centre of many supporters’ ire this afternoon following his puzzling performance in the Betfred Cup semi-final at Hampden.

Rangers and Motherwell clashed at the national stadium today with both teams fighting for the right to take on Celtic in next month’s final, and the match definitely didn’t go past without its talking points.

Motherwell scored twice in the second-half through the impressive Louis Moult to seal a well-deserved victory, but it could’ve been very different if McLean had been on his game.

With the score poised at 1-0, the referee failed to punish ‘Well midfielder Ryan Bowman for a dangerous looking elbow challenge on Fabio Cardoso, which left the Rangers centre-back with a badly bloodied nose.

Bowman had been booked for a similar challenge of the Portuguese defender in the first-half, and could’ve probably seen a straight-red for this one, but no cards were shown at all.

And to compound things, McLean then proceeded to send BOTH managers into the stands, and Gers boss Caixinha fumed at the state of his player’s nose.

McLean then completed his afternoon by failing to send off either Moult or Bruno Alves after both had taken obvious kicks at each other – and he didn’t even speak to Alves at all:

All in all, it probably wasn’t his finest hour -but what did you make of his performance?
