It hasn’t taken the Republic of Ireland very long to open the scoring against Moldova tonight, with Daryl Murphy finding the net after two minutes.
The pressure was firmly on Martin O’Neill prior to kick-off, with Wales edging past Georgia thanks to a memorable first international goal from Tom Lawrence.
That result for Wales means Chris Coleman’s side held a four point lead over the Irish before action got under way at the Aviva Stadium.

However, Murphy has eased that tension after a long-throw from Stephen Ward found the Moldovan back-line sleeping.
And the Nottingham Forrest front man made no mistake as he poked the ball into the net:

Tonight’s match is a must-win for Ireland, as they look to set up a playoff decider with Wales on Monday night.
However, such an encouraging start will surely settle any nerves in the Irish ranks and allow O’Neill’s side to dominate proceedings.
