Manchester United defeated Benfica tonight after a brutal goalkeeping error by youngster Mile Svilar – and then proceeded to console him on the full-time whistle.
After a dour and turgid first-half, it looked like Jose Mourinho’s team were going to eek out another dismal 0-0 draw in Lisbon, but Marcus Rashford whipped in a free-kick in the 64th minute which Svilar failed to deal with.
The 18-year-old was only making his second-ever appearance for the Portuguese champions and became the youngest-ever goalie in the Champions League’s history in doing so – but he got his angles completely wrong for the only goal of the match:

United players might have appealed for the goal at the time, and understandably so, but as soon as the match was done and dusted, some of them made a point of consoling Svilar, with Romelu Lukaku giving him an extended pep talk:
Great sportsmanship from the Man Utd players this ? pic.twitter.com/5aPKICyJ0D

Will the advice stand him in good stead? Well, we’ll probably find out when both teams do it all again at Old Trafford two weeks from now.
What do you think of the error? Was it really that bad?
