A Panamanian national team substitute will be enjoying legendary status this morning after contributing to his country’s historic World Cup qualification.
On an eventful final night of qualifying for Russia 2018, Panama beat Costa Rica 1-0 to secure one of three CONCACAF places alongside last night’s opponents and Mexico.
They actually beat Honduras and the USA to get the spot, qualifying for their first ever World Cup and leading to their president declaring today as a national holiday.
It took a lot of hard work over months of qualifying for Panama to get their spot at next summer’s tournament – and it took the help of some brilliant time-wasting from this substitute too:
That is outstanding!
At first, it was reported that this was a ball boy, but you can clearly see it’s one of the Panama substitutes who was warming up nearby.
Thankfully, Costa Rica had already qualified for the World Cup so probably weren’t that bothered about the Panama time-wasting.
And after seeing the celebrations in the aftermath of their victory, we can’t blame them for doing whatever it takes to qualify.
