Argentina‘s hopes of making it to next year’s World Cup took a serious hit last night, after they were held to a 0-0 draw with Peru.

Most worrying, however, was the form of Argentina’s best player and talisman – Lionel Messi.

The Barcelona ace is often criticised for seemingly saving his best form for the La Liga giants and failing to reach the same heights for his national side.

And while it’s difficult to criticise a player who is undoubtedly among the best to ever play the game, it’s also fair to say the 30-year-old wasn’t at his best last night.

The most damning of evidence was Messi’s shot in the 40th minute, which woefully sailed out for a throw-in to Peru.

Argentina need to get a victory against Ecuador in their final qualification match if they are to have any chance of reaching the World Cup in 2018.

Jorge Sampaoli’s side currently in sixth spot behind Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia and Peru.
