Football Fans Are Heartbroken as Gigi Buffon is Forced Into Early Italy Retirement

Italy were beaten in their World Cup playoff tonight, meaning the Azzuri won’t be at next summer’s finals in Russia – and we’ve seen the last of Gianluigi Buffon on the international stage.

The Italians were seen off after two-legs against Sweden, losing by a solitary first-leg goal, after finishing behind Spain in their qualifying section.

Despite losing 1-0 in Stockholm at the weekend, Italy were still fancied to overturn the deficit at the San Siro this evening, but a listless, lifeless and uninspiring performances couldn’t break down the stubborn Swedes.

It’ll be the first World Cup in 60 years that Italy haven’t qualified for, and it means Buffon – who won the World Cup in 2006 – has been forced into an early international retirement.

The legendary goalie has been synonymous with Italy and Juventus throughout his entire career, and a tournament next summer without him in it just doesn’t bare thinking about for some football fans:

Are you disappointed about Buffon and Italy’s early exit?
