Video: Gigi Buffon Gives Tearful Apology on Live TV After Italy’s World Cup Failure

Gigi Buffon was forced to give a tearful apology to Italy‘s furious football fans tonight after Sweden knocked them out of their World Cup playoff – meaning Buffon was forced into an early international retirement.

The legendary goalkeeper played a massive part in the Italians winning the World Cup back in 2006 and had vowed to bow out after next year’s finals in Russia, but Sweden’s 1-0 win over two-legs has put paid to any fitting farewell.

Tonight’s second-leg in Milan ended 0-0, meaning Buffon will at least go out with a clean-sheet, but the notion of Italy missing out on the World Cup for the first time since 1958 – and of never pulling on his country’s shirt again – was all too much for the veteran at full-time:

He might’ve gone out on a night of embarrassment for Italian football but there’s absolutely no doubt that Gigi Buffon can definitely hold his head up high after a glorious career.
