Highlights of last night’s friendly at Pittodrie showed Scotland played pretty well against Netherlands despite the 1-0 defeat.

Malky Mackay named a youthful Tartan Army starting XI for the visit of the Dutch – who will also miss out on the World Cup next summer – with a number of new players earning their first caps.

Ryan Jack, Callum McGregor, Kenny McLean and Ryan Christie all started, with Jason Cummings also getting a game off the bench.

Kieran Tierney was captain on a night of changes for Scotland.

But they were unable to avoid defeat, with Ryan Babel setting up Memphis Depay to tap home in the first half.

Looking at the highlights of the game though, it shows Scotland had plenty of chances to either draw or win the game:

Despite not making the World Cup, Netherlands boast a team full of talented players, including Giorginio Wijnaldum, Memphis Depay, Daley Blind, Virgil van Dijk and Kevin Strootman, who all started last night.

So there’s definitely promise heading into the next campaign under a new manager.

Now fans will be hoping the SFA appoint the best candidate to replace Gordon Strachan and give the country a better chance of making it to the first major tournament since 1998.
