Brendan Rodgers telling the story of how happy an early fan is about the job he’s done at Celtic shows how much pleasure he’s getting out of the job.
The Hoops manager may have been very disappointed with how his team played in yesterday’s 0-0 draw with rivals Rangers at Celtic Park, but he didn’t show it in his post-match comments.
Instead of criticising his team, he praised them for the performance and went on to hail the 2017 they’ve had.
And he has a point. Celtic completed a historic, unbeaten treble earlier in the season and have competed in the Champions League too, qualifying for the Europa League in 2018 as a result of their third placing in the group stages.
The records, achievements and trophies have been no problem for Rodgers, but he says it’s the happiness from the fans that pleases him most – particularly an old lady called Patsy, who has made an impact on the Northern Irishman.
Speaking after the game, Rodgers, per heraldscotland.com, said: “My biggest pleasure is seeing the happiness in people. People will talk at New Year about the big moments. I have two things that spring to mind. One is seeing the happiness of the people when we’ve played well and won.
“But the biggest is probably an old lady Patsy, who is in her 70s. She stands outside our hotel for every game we play whether it’s raining, whether it’s snowing, covered up with Celtic gear. She wears her Brendan hat, her Brendan scarf. Her son came up to me not so long ago and said ‘Thank you so much, you’ve given her a new lease of life’. That makes me as happy as picking up a trophy.
“If you can do that to people and help them, and make them happy, then that makes me happy.”
Given his success, Rodgers is beginning to be regularly linked with moves away from the club and that will only continue as time passes and he wins more trophies.
But his recent comments suggests that he knows exactly what he’s got at Celtic and it might take a huge offer for Rodgers to consider leaving the club.
