The Belgian striker has endured an extremely frustrating season after suffering an injury several months ago but is now back in action and had the chance to seal what could be a vital victory against West Brom on Saturday, when Palace were awarded a last-minute penalty with the score at 2-2.
Midfielder Luka Milivojević had already scored from the spot earlier in the match, and is the club’s designated taker, but Benteke insisted he take it – against the will of his team-mates – and managed to miss.
The match ended in a draw, and manager Roy Hodgson was pretty angry afterwards, and now Benteke has been forced to issue an apology.
Speaking via the Independent, Hodgson said: “The first opportunity, this morning, he gets the players around, says his piece – he’s already said it to me – that’s a strong and correct thing to do, and he makes it perfectly clear, ‘I took this responsibility; I shouldn’t have done because I’m breaking ranks, I’m not obeying team instructions, so I apologise for that, but I’m now going to get on with it’, and once more, I’m pretty sure he’ll make it up to us.
“I am very happy with the way he has reacted to it and taken responsibility and the way he has explained that to the rest of the team.”
If you were Milivojević, or another Palace first-team player, would you accept his apology?
