Diego Maradona has slammed Cristiano Ronaldo for proclaiming himself as the best player ever, with the ex-Argentina international also insisting Lionel Messi lacks the charisma he showed during his career.
Ronaldo picked up his fifth Ballon d’Or trophy in Paris last week, meaning the Real Madrid forward has now won the prestigious award the same amount of times as Barcelona rival, Messi.
And the Portugal international was humble as ever when collecting the trophy, deciding it was the right moment to tell everyone he’s “never seen anyone better than” himself.
Not that Maradona believes a word of it, with the World Cup winner describing Ronaldo’s statement as “nonsense”.
Speaking to Spanish outlet AS, via Football Espana, Maradona said, “Ronaldo said he is the best ever? Tell him to stop talking nonsense!
“The best? For me… From what little I saw of them, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Cruyff… and Messi, but it can be Cristiano too.”
The 57-year-old went on to discuss the comparisons between himself and Messi – a player many consider to have surpassed Maradona’s greatness in recent years.
“What does Messi lack to be Maradona? It can’t be bought, it’s inside of you and comes as standard.
“Messi wouldn’t be able to sit down 20 players, talk to them and motivate them, like I did.
“He’d say, ‘what do you want to ask me, lads?’ They’d ask him the questions.”
Ronaldo will have a break from domestic competition this week, with Zinedine Zidane’s side competing in the Club World Cup final against Brazilian side Gremio.
Meanwhile Messi and his team-mates will be looking to extend their eight-point lead over Madrid with a victory over Deportivo la Coruna.
